Romania opens labor market to 100,000 foreign workers in 2024

08/01/2024

Entrepreneurs in Romania rely on workers from countries outside the EU to cover their labor needs. The biggest problem is finding employees for the courier and construction companies, the "Adeverul" newspaper wrote in its article.

Referring to a government decision from the end of last year, the publication informs that in 2024, 100,000 foreign workers will be admitted to the labor market in Romania. The reasons are the growing number of applications for work permits, as well as the significant number of vacancies claimed by employers.

According to the National Employment Agency, in the first eight months of this year, 304,371 out of a total of just over 500,000 jobs, or 60 percent of all vacancies, were declared vacant because they could not be filled. The situation worsens compared to 2022, when hard-to-fill vacancies were 44 percent of the total.

Often the qualifications and skills do not correspond to the characteristics of the jobs, there is a lack of interest on the part of people looking for work, they are not in line with their expectations (for example: poor, unsatisfactory working conditions, long distance from home, etc.), indicates the edition.

The most advertised vacancies in the first eight months of 2023 were in construction, where the need to fill was 64,027. Restaurant owners needed 28,614 workers, reposting 18,373 of the positions (64 percent). The situation is even worse for postal and courier entrepreneurs, who announced almost 27,000 vacancies and managed to fill only 2,700, writes "Adeverul".

The number of registered unemployed in the county unemployment offices as of the end of August 2023 is 230,545, including persons on guaranteed minimum income who are able to work. Most of those in the latter category either have no qualifications or their training is in areas other than those required in the labor market.
