First forecast for the labor market in 2024.

21/09/2023

The long-time expert Georgi K. Parvanov commented on Bulgaria Wants You what his expectations are for the state of the labor market by the end of this year and in the coming year.

Mr. Parvanov, what is the state of the labor market in Bulgaria after the end of the summer?

The dynamics are huge! In the last two months, I personally receive between 10 and 20 CVs a day, which has not happened in years. What's even more strange is that 4-5 of them a day belong to IT specialists. There has been a huge increase in LinkedIn profiles marked as looking for work, and also many people who have found work.

I want to emphasize that the autumn-winter season is not yet in full swing and during this period, although it is the end of summer, the labor market should be calmer and with very low unemployment.

Given the dynamic state of the labor market at the moment, what can we expect in the coming months until the end of 2023?

I expect a smooth increase in unemployment to 6-7%. Anything above 6% is a sign of caution. And the absolute upper limit that we should not cross is 10%. Gradually and smoothly the opportunities in the form of open positions will decrease.
This is an ongoing trend that started in the spring of this year.

What are the areas to which young people should focus, so that their choice of future profession is consistent with the state of the labor market?

If I am a young person today and I had to choose a major with perspective, I would focus on food technology, engineering, technology, medical specialties, agriculture, energy, psychology, new IT technologies such as AI, IoT, machine learning, also logistics and transportation.

The list of career opportunities that can years from now bring satisfaction, peace of mind and good income is long, but the ones I have listed are the leading ones to date.

Having opened the topic of the future, let's look at the not-so-distant year 2024. What is expected to bring us?

The permanent increase in the return of Bulgarians from abroad and foreigners from the European Union, who will come to live permanently in the country, will continue. The main growth will be from those countries that are most affected by the decline of the economy, such as Germany, Italy, Great Britain.

More and more Bulgarians will prefer to receive BGN 2,500 gross and live at home in Stara Zagora or Ruse (the examples are relative) than to receive 2,500 euros gross in Berlin or Amsterdam. And that will be great!
